So there you are – you have done all the work spent the money with your chosen website designer and paid for your SEO to help you to page one… and somebody rings you up to say your websites down / or some part of it isnt working… not too good and not great for sales or your products / services!
Maybe you have someone check it every morning / every afternoon – the most efficient use of your precious resource, maybe you dont, but whatever way you look at it is isnt great to be told by your customers (if indeed they would tell you) – that all or some of your site is unavailable.
Google, like your searchers, takes a dim view of it and both take the same action – Google ranks it lowly and likewise your searchers will do too (if they can find it again in Google to do so 
). It is THE most basic of cardinal sins. Sites that were on page one have dropped like a stone simply because they had network issues and were down for more than a day. With the new Google search engine changes – crawling websites and make decisions based upon the changes much more frequently and quicker – notice of this type of problem will become more prevalent, you have been warned!
There are companies that can check parts of your website – to see if some of the functionality isnt working, poll your site, at regular time periods during the day / night and will email you, SMS you if it cannot contact the website. This also goes for other services too like SaaS, Web Apps and email services. Some companies provide Widgets that sit on your desktop too (Vista / Windows 7, Mac etc…) than can simply alert you visually to the problem. This is great especially if you dont have IT departments, they are overworked or simply want to keep then in check . It is also, in most cases, quite simple to set up and doesnt require coding experience, all it needs is for the monitoring person to be able to put in their email address!
I personally use these companies for my own peace of mind but dont actively promote any site that provides them but it is well worth doing a Google search for ‘Website Monitoring’, it can cost from nothing to £15 per month for the basics and can check your site every minute up to every 12hrs.
